About Me

WELCOME! BIENVENIDXS!
Hello! My name is Miguel Muñoz Valtierra. I am a first year graduate student at the Hispanic Studies Department at the University of California – Riverside. I am also a Mellon Mays fellow (MMUF), a Spanish of California Lab (SoCaLab) research assistant and currently a research assistant in the UCR Latino Latin American Studies Research Center (LLASRC).

A little bit about me, I’m a first generation college student. I have a lot of interests but my academic focus lies in Spanish linguistics, social media, bilingualism, and sociolinguistics. I also have extensive experience being a peer educator for UCR’s CHASS First-Year experience program.
My latest research explores how the community of San Basilio de Palenque, a bilingual community of Spanish and a Spanish creole known as Palenquero, interacts on social media platforms. I investigate how the community with a historically marginalized language interacts with social media. My research attempts to answer the questions; Do the residents of San Basilio use Palenquero online? Does the use of Palenquero online emulate the use of Palenquero in real life?
